Relief efforts under way to support Tongaat tornado victims
Following the destructive tornado that ripped through Tongaat on Monday, mass efforts are under way to provide relief to devastated victims.
The Haven of Rest NPO in Tongaat is a drop-off zone for relief and is on the ground helping victims daily. With volunteers visiting displaced and affected communities, the angels of mercy deliver food, clothing, blankets, mattresses and water among other essential items. Hot meals are also being prepared on a daily basis for distribution to affected communities.
The NPO is calling on all to continue to support their relief operations on the ground, which is only possible through generous donations, contributions of blankets, clothes and non-perishable foods for disaster aid.
Tongaat has been classified as the most affected area, with hundreds of houses severely destroyed. The damage extended to schools, roads, community halls and healthcare facilities. With many people displaced and left to pick up the pieces, neighbouring communities and generous donors have rallied in support of those affected.
“We thank the local community, businesses and individuals for rallying together to help the community of Tongaat. “This is unreal, like a movie that a tornado hit Tongaat,” said Ps Ronnie Naidoo of Haven of Rest.
“Hundreds of houses are flattened and thousands of people have no food or shelter. Whatever you are sending to the Haven of Rest, we will send it on your behalf to all these needy people.
“God bless you for standing with the community of Tongaat at this critical time. “We thank you for helping us during this disaster,” said Ps Naidoo.
